Audience Effects Theory
1) Write a definition of a passive audience:
Passive: This is the belief that audiences passively consume media material and that these messages have the same effect on everyone.
2) Write a definition of an active audience:
Active: This is the more recent and widely held belief that audiences interact with and make intentional decisions about the media they watch.
3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:
The Hypodermic needle theory is a linear communication theory that proposes that media messages are injected directly into the brains of passive audience members.
4) Write down a media product (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame) for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you
INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: The Times newspaper
> Why: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.
PERSONAL IDENTITY:Movie based in school eg.The breakfast club
> Why: Movie is based in a school where i can relate on studying etc.
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: Tiktok
> Why:entertaining and some times can have interesting facts
RELATIONSHIPS:footasylum locked in
> Why: where young youtubers go and spend 10 days in a house {youtubers that i've been watching for quite a while}and over the 10 days i get to know the characters even better and how they are in their real world.
5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).
The Blue Planet is a documentary that speaks about marine life, fishes, and plants under water and supports me with saying information and surveillance. It also helps us by educating us about nature underwater for diversion and enjoyment. For personal relationships, I may say that David Attenborough is one of the greatest and most liked presenters who travels the globe.
